Bald Eagles Pictures - National Symbol
Bald Eagles are majestic birds whose strength and independence became the impetus for Americans to adopt the species as the national symbol in 1782. These are large birds that reach the size of 30 inches in length with the wingspread being up to 72-84 inches. Contrary to some
people's belief, the species got its name because of the white head, but not a "bald head". The name comes from the Old English "bald" that stood for "white headed."
Bald Eagles Pictures - Description
Characteristic features of the American Bald Eagle are brown plumage, white head, and brightly colored yellow bill. In young Bald Eagles, the head is dark brown and there are some white spots on the tail and the under wings. This provides for a confusion of young Bald Eagles with immature golden Eagles.
Bald Eagles reach the weight of about 8-14 pounds with females being larger than males. This is a common trait in prey birds. The Bald Eagle is often described as fierce. However, wildlife lovers refer to the species as timid and opportunistic.

Scientific Name: Haliaeetus leucocephalus
Federal Status: Threatened
Life Span: about 25 years in the wild and over 35 years in captivity.
American Bald Eagles are found throughout North America and prefer coastal areas, rivers, and lakes. In other words, the species is likely to be found in areas that are close to open water. This is easy to understand since the Bald Eagle preys mostly on fish such as salmon, carrion, and similar sea products.
It is interesting to know that the American Bald Eagle pairs for life. The pairs renew courting every year, after which the hatch of one to three eggs is laid. The species is a perfect nest builder. The Bald Eagles build their nests on tops of rocks and large trees.
