Being pure carnivores, these birds accumulate toxic levels of dangerous agents from waterfowl and fish.

This is a powerfully looking bird, the national symbol of the United States. Adult birds are distinguished by their white-colored heads and tails. The birds have extremely sharp eyesight. It is approximately five to six times sharper than the eyesight of a human. This is one of the largest birds of prey in the world. Mature birds reach the size of 3 to 3 1/2 feet tall. They weigh 8 to 15 pounds. Females tend to be larger than males. Both males and females have yellow legs. When the birds are young, they have a dark beak and black eyes.
