Once an endangered species, the birds of the species are making a comeback from the decline in their population. This is the national symbol of the United States. Its power, dignity, strength and beauty are unique. The birds live up to 30 years. Their reproductive rate is very low, because these birds reach sexual maturity at the age of 4-5 years and normally have only one chick in the nest. If there are two or more young, the weakest ones cannot get enough food and die.

These are very beautiful and powerful birds with an amazingly large wingspan, white head and tail feathers. It is a spectacular sight to see this bird gliding high without flapping its wings. Having extremely sharp eyesight, these birds spot their prey in the water. Everything in these birds is designed for flying high. Their skeleton is only 5% of their body weight. Their beak and talons are made of keratin which is much lighter than bones. Feathers and bones are hollow and very lightweight.
