When the Great Seal of the United States was adopted on June 20, 1782, this dignified and proud bird was recognized as the national symbol. Of all large birds, these are the only species confined to North America. This massive bird has a wingspan from 6 to 8 feet and lives in the area from Alaska to Northern Mexican border and from Pacific to Atlantic coast. In the 18th century, there were more than 50,000 such birds in the world, but human encroachment, habitat destruction, poaching and excessive hunting caused a severe decline of their population. Contamination of the food source with DDT and other pesticides was the main threat to these birds in the 20th century.
