Bald Eagles Pictures - Interesting Facts

The National symbol of the United States, Bald Eagles have a number of unique characteristics that trigger the attention of scientists and wildlife observers. The Bald Eagle is a predator that feeds mostly on fish. The species has perfect eyesight that enables it to see the prey from high above.

The Bald Eagle's two foveae allow the species to see simultaneously forward and to the side. The species can see the prey from the distance of several feet no matter whether it is gliding, soaring, or flapping. This fact appears more amazing when we come to think that fish are darker on top and are really hard to see from any height. Fishermen are sure to know how difficult it is to locate fish from even a short distance.

The Bald Eagle, however, does not have any difficulty in it. It is true that young individuals are often noticed to have confused fish and inanimate objects. The species eats both live and dead fish. Dead fish are easier to catch since they are floating on the surface of the water with their underside up, which makes them more visible to the Bald Eagle's eye.

The eyes of the Bald Eagle are almost the size of the human eye. During sleep, the Bald Eagle will put down eyelids. Bald Eagles have color vision. The perfect eyesight makes good hearing not essential for the species.

The features of the Bald Eagle are made of keratin. There are about 7,000 feathers in the species. Feathering is a good insulator since it protects the species from cold and rain. Bald Eagles have strong wings that can be as large as 84 inches.
